| Over the past three years, I have received many requests for advice on how to get started as a professional artist. |
It seems that most people reject the idea of becoming a professional artist before they even begin, thinking that there is no way they could possibly succeed. But you should never give up without taking even one single step toward your dream! Here is a list of steps that you can take, in no particular order, to start the journey towards becoming a "pro." Some of them are easy, some are hard, some are costly and some are free. Most can be done independently of any others - so you can start with any one of them. | ![]() |

![]() | When I decided to try to change my art from a hobby into a business (1998), the first thing I did was quit my "real" job as a civil engineer. With a moratorium on all unnecessary spending, I had enough savings to not work for 6 months and I spent that time pulling the business side of my art together. Hey, that savings was meant for a rainy day, not to be depleted like a crazy person!! But I decided that investing in myself and my future was more important than saving for some unknown need.
